Want a Cake For Your Valentine?
If you want a special cake for Valentine’s Day, or any other day for that matter, there are all kinds of ways to make a fancy cake.
First, you could just bake a plain cake, and put decorations on it. You can use sprinkles or buy pre-made decorations at almost any grocery store. If you want to be a little more creative, you can get decorative tools, and write words, and make embellishments on your cake with different colored icings.
Here are a few more cake decorating ideas:
* Characters: There are hundreds of famous characters to use for cake decorating. You can make any cake special by drawing in Dora the Explorer, or Blues Clues. Or you may want to cut up the cake to make the entire cake into a favorite character. You could try freehand drawings using icing as your paints. Or to make it simpler, there are all kinds of character cake pans you can buy that are much easier to decorate. All you need to do is make stars of different colors, rather like paint-by-numbers, and viola! You’ve got a special cake!

* Themes: Perhaps you’re having a party along a paricular theme, or maybe the person you’re making the cake for has a particular hobby you could use as your theme. For Valentine’s day you could put little heart candies on the cake, or draw valentine cards on the cake. Buy little plastic cherubs or whatever is appropriate to your theme, and put them here and there on the cake.
* Big Boy Toys: You’ve heard the saying, “The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys,” right? Well, use little models of your boys’ favorite toy, whatever his age. Or you could cut out pictures of some of his favorite things, and put them on stiff paper and prop them up on the cake with a toothpick, or lay them flat on the cake. If you’re really going all out and buying one of those big boy toys, get a little plastic two-piece heart that opens up, and put a paper in the heart telling the big boy where to find the toy. If you really want to string out the suspense, give him clues that lead him ever closer to the prize.
* Animals: You can also use an animal theme by cutting the cake to look like any animal, or draw in a scene using animals. It could be a zoo scene with several animals or choose one animal and decorate the cake with other decorations showing where it came from. Use your imagination.
* Food: Does your valentine have a favorite food? Maybe theyyou are making a cake for the opening of an Italian restaurant. You could create a scene depicting the building, or if it is for a chef opening the restaurant, a scene of the kitchen with different Italian dishes would be fun. You can also cut the cake to look like a hamburger, hot dog, taco etc… The sky is the limit when it comes to cake decorating using a food theme.
* Holiday Themes: I remember when bunny cakes became popular at Easter, Wilton has pans and decorating supplies for all holiday cake decorating designs. A heart on Valentine’s day, or a 4 leaf clover on St. Patrick’s day is a wonderful way to say happy holidays.
* Your Own Creation: If you have been involved in cake decorating for quite some time, or if you are a novice with an artistic flair, you can create your own cake based on the theme or the celebration.
Whatever cake you make will be the center of attention as cakes usually are at a celebration. It has become tradition to have a outstanding cake at every celebration. Knowing that you are the one who is artistic enough to make this cake, and the praise you will receive from others, will give you a bushel of satisfaction.
Make a cake and make a memory!
